Police in California are searching for an Irishman who has gone missing while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail.

David O'Sullivan (25) has been missing since April 7 according to a circular issued by the Murietta Police Department.

On that date he sent an email to his parents and posted a package from a post office in Idyllwild.

He has not made contact since and never showed up to a pre-arranged meeting with a friend in Santa Barbara in early May.

Police say David was supposedly hiking alone along the trail which runs from the Mexican border to Canada.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact the Murietta Police Department on 001 951 6963615.

According to a poster David has blue eyes, brown hair and is approximately 5'10 and wears glasses.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.

A Facebook page set up to gather further information says that David left Ireland on March 20 for the five months hike.
