Emergency services received an anonymous call from a person this evening, Gardai confirmed to independent.ie.

Emergency services responded to the call and a search and rescue operation began following the report that a person had entered the River Shannon this evening.

Both emergency services and the Coast Guard helicopter were at the scene.

Gardai have now confirmed the report was a bogus call.

There is currently a separate search operation underway in Limerick for two students who have been missing since last week.

Mark Casey (19) was last seen leaving Angel Lane nightclub at Robert Street in Limerick city centre at around 1.30am on Friday.

Steven Cavanagh (21) from Clonlara has not been seen since around 2.30am on Thursday.

Gardai are appealing for information on the whereabouts of the two young men.
