Seanad plan is a danger, says rebel Mitchell
TAOISEACH Enda Kenny's plan to abolish the Seanad has been challenged as a "danger" to democracy by Fine Gael rebel Olivia Mitchell, writes Michael Brennan.
The Dublin South TD urged caution ahead of the referendum, saying that it was not clear what is going to replace the Seanad if it was abolished.
"The danger I see in the absence of the Seanad, with all its flaws, and it has many, and also retaining a reduced and weakened Dail, while retaining a strong executive, we will actually have less democracy, less accountability and less potential to deliver for our people," she said.
Ms Mitchell was sacked from the FG frontbench by Mr Kenny when she joined an attempted heave against him in 2010.
