CONTRACTORS on seven school or college building projects have been referred to the authorities because of employment irregularities.
It follows 14 audits carried out on sites at the request of Education Minister Ruairi Quinn to ensure compliance with the rules on pay and conditions.
Five of the cases have been referred to the Revenue Commissioners, one to the Department of Social Protection and one to the National Employment Rights Authority (NERA).
Last year, the Department of Education appointed Contractors Administration Services (CAS) to conduct audits on school and college building projects. The department also set up an online complaint system to enable individuals to bring to its attention cases of alleged non-compliance.
At the end of 2013, 28 complaints had been received in respect of 22 building projects, all but four of which were received via the online system.
The scrutiny comes as the department works its way through a €2bn, five-year school buildings programme, with a further €125m being spent on higher education infrastructure.
