THE Air Corps yesterday aided the rescue of 17 Spanish fishermen from a stricken trawler off the south-west coast.
The alarm was raised at around 9am after the German-owned Ortegal 1, pictured, began taking on water in rough seas around 150 miles west of Valentia Island, Co Kerry.
The crew members were eventually rescued by their sister vessel, Ortegal 3, and were taken back to Spain.
A Coast Guard spokesman said last night that an Air Corps aircraft was monitoring the stricken trawler, which had yet to sink by nightfall.
Navigational warnings were issued to other ships that were in the area at the time that they should steer clear of the potential hazard.
