RTE star Ryan Tubridy has blasted short sentences for child sex abusers – and said something needs to be done to ‘fix them forever’.

The Late Late Show presenter made the comments on his Radio One show yesterday.

He was going through the papers when he commented on the case of two sisters whose stepfather was jailed for abusing them since they were nine.

Emma and Vanessa Witherow were abused by their stepfather John Joe Paterson from Kilclooney in Co Tipperary.

Tubridy, the father of two young daughters, said he was sickened reading the ‘vile’ details of the case.

He said: “The man got put away for six-and-a-half years. I can’t imagine that’s it’s a lot of time.

“I think sometimes people need to be put away for a very, very, very long time. And not just put away, I think I’d go further than that – I think sometimes things need to be done to people to fix them forever.”

He also praised the bravery of Paterson’s victims who waived their right to anonymity so he could be named publicly.

“How they have had the courage to stand up in the public and talk about it is breathtaking.”
