FORMER rugby international Shane Byrne is more used to carrying burly men and oval balls across the line.

But this weekend he had an even more important task than clinching titles for his country -- carrying a bride-to-be to the aisle as the arctic weather put her dream wedding in jeopardy.

Catriona Walker, of Kingswood in Dublin, had been planning her dream wedding to her boyfriend of 14 years, Aidan Bird.

But their chosen venue -- Brooklodge in Aughrim, Co Wicklow -- lies at the end of an icy road and she feared she wouldn't make it to the church on time.

Byrne -- a director of his family business, Arklow Waste Disposal -- offered his sturdy vehicles as transport for the wedding party.

Covering her peep-toe sandals with unfashionable but practical blue plastic bags, she made it to the church on time to wed her childhood sweetheart.
