RTE faces competition claims

RTE has been asked to respond to claims that it has an unfair advantage over newspapers when it comes to commercial activities in the digital media sector.
The state broadcaster has been requested to come before an Oireachtas committee to answer claims by the National Newspapers of Ireland (NNI) that its online activities are not competing fairly against online services offered by newspapers.
NNI claimed RTE was able to use its €200m annual license fee income to leverage its online mobile activities.
At a meeting of the Oireachtas Communications Committee yesterday, representatives from the NNI claimed that investment in their own online services was being undermined by RTE's digital activities and that the national broadcaster had an unfair advantage through its ability to promote its own products.
