RTE has apologised for an offensive promotional tweet for a radio programme which caused outrage on Twitter today.
The radio programme GodSlot sent a tweet this evening asking whether gays can be “cured”.
Scores of angry Twitter users voiced their anger online.
The full tweet from the GodSlot – which has now been deleted - read: “Can gays be cured of being gay? Try the GodSlot Fri.17/01”
After numerous attempts by the programme’s twitter account to defend its original question, RTE later backed down.
“Apologies if offended by a promo for @TheGodSlot tomorrow night. The contributor refutes the value of any conversion therapy for gay people.”
However, earlier this evening angry tweeters were being told to ‘listen to the programme before rushing to judgement'.
“We're posing a question that has been posed. Listen to the programme before judging,” the Twitter account said.
The God Slot airs on RTE Radio1 tomorrow from 10-10.30pm.
One angry tweeter said today: “Perhaps even more galling than original @GodSlot tweet is their reaction to criticism from Twitter users.”
Another said: “Can #godSlot twitterers be cured of over-reaction? Of misunderstanding irony? Seemingly not. Yawn Yawn. #GodslotBashers”
