Rough conditions are hampering the search for a lobster fisherman feared missing off the Mayo coast.

A 30-ft half decker belonging to the 24-year-old was found adrift near the shoreline in Broadhaven Bay with its power and lights still on.

Coastguard units confirmed the find and said they are continuing to search for the missing fisherman.

The alarm was raised yesterday by a relative of the man, who contacted the coastguard when he did not return home from a fishing trip yesterday evening.

He had been expected to return to shore at 5 pm.

Several helicopters, along with the Ballyglass RNLI Lifeboat and a number of fishing boats and coastguard teams are searching the area between Rinore Point and Benwee Head.

The search resumed this morning at 6am after poor weather conditions and visibility forced a halt to efforts last night.

It is understood the search will continue for several more hours before efforts begin again tomorrow morning at 6 am.
