THE REVS of 160 roaring engines filled the air as a group of 'Cannonballers' prepared for their journey around the country.
The second annual Cannonball Run took off from Merrion Square in Dublin early yesterday morning and travelled to Donegal and Mayo on the first of a three-day journey in aid of charity. Hundreds of people are taking part, with 160 cars in the event based on the famous road movies of the 1980s.
Among those who paid €750 to enter a car this year is Boyzone member Shane Lynch, driving Ronan Keating's Porsche.
Organisers hope to raise €150,000 for Barretstown, the Kildare camp for children with serious illnesses.
After they left Merrion Square under garda escort yesterday, the convoy of cars drove first to Donegal where they did a tour of the town before travelling on to Westport for the night.
Today will see them drive to Ashford Castle in Cong before going on to Killarney where they will stay overnight.
Tomorrow will be the final day of the event when the Cannonballers will drive to Cork.
Among those attending the launch yesterday morning were model Rosanna Davison, pictured above, TV presenter Kathryn Thomas, and Dublin Lord Mayor Gerry Breen.
