A serious rock fall at 'Star Wars' location Skellig Michael has hampered plans to allow visitors back to the tourist site - days before it was due to reopen.

The Co Kerry island, which was used in 'The Force Awakens', the latest episode of the Star Wars series, was due to be opened for visitors on Saturday.

However, the Office of Public Works (OPW), which takes care of the site, said that it is currently "clearly deeply unsafe" for both staff and visitors.

A large boulder broke free from a slope and landed in the middle of a roadway on the island yesterday afternoon.

The OPW said the upper slopes above the roadway are "highly unstable and unsafe".

OPW staff were on site last night attempting to gauge the scale of the problem and the risk it creates.
