Like father, like son.

Gareth Robinson followed in his father Peter's footsteps yesterday by being elected on the first count.

The son of the DUP leader comfortably retained his seat on Castlereagh Borough Council at the count in Belfast.

Meanwhile, Sinn Fein MLA Gerry Kelly was injured when a car driven by robbery suspects hit a police vehicle and four others in Belfast.

The collisions occurred on a M1 slip road shortly before 3pm, as the gang of robbers made their escape following a raid on a commercial premises on the Lisburn Road.

Despite the crash, Mr Kelly later returned to the local election count centre. A Sinn Fein source said Mr Kelly had been a little shaken but was "going on about his business".
