A runaway pig caused havoc as commuters were returning home from work during rush-hour yesterday.

The adult sow brought traffic to halt as she went walkabout on the Headford Road, on the northern outskirts of Galway city.

Motorists could scarcely believe their eyes as the animal meandered between lanes on her merry way, oblivious to their honking horns.

She was, however, keeping well within the speed limit as she barely passed a glance at the 100kmh sign.

It seems Miss Piggy had escaped from a local farm and decided to investigate her surroundings without her owner's knowledge.

Frustrated motorists made calls on mobile phones to report her road trip to Galway garda station and, understandably, had some difficulty convincing officers they weren't telling porkies.

One motorist rashly attempted to usher her off the road and towards a grass verge, but thought twice about it as she chased towards him.

The pig did, however, prove obliging to our photographer, Hany Marzouk, even if she didn't quite manage to get her ears out of her eyes.

The sow's adventure eventually came to an end when the owner arrived at the scene and packed her into a trailer for a more conventional journey back home.
