Road death toll rises to 144 after two separate crashes

TWO people became the latest road casualties yesterday in separate crashes.

In the first accident, a young man was killed when his car smashed into a tree in his hometown.

Brian Kelly (28), from Durrow, Co Laois, died in the crash on the N8 at Watercastle, Durrow, shortly before 10pm. He was travelling alone at the time.

Gardai in Abbeyleix are appealing for witnesses.

Mr Kelly, who is survived by his parents and two sisters, had recently returned from Australia.

Meanwhile, a man was killed in a road incident involving a car and a van last night.

It happened on the Boyle Road in Frenchpark, Co Roscommon. Two men and two women, who were in the car, were rushed to Roscommon Hospital.

One of the man, in his early 70s, was pronounced dead in the hospital.

The driver of the van was not seriously hurt.
