ONE of the country's busiest roads remained closed last night as gardai investigated the cause of a fatal crash.
A married man, named as Gerard McCarron (60) from Knockronaghan, in Emyvale, Co Monaghan, was killed after his white Toyota Hiace van collided with an articulated lorry at a bend on the Dublin to Derry route just south of Emyvale.
The collision occurred shortly before 11.30am yesterday and gardai are appealing for information.
The victim, whose family are heavily involved in the local GAA club, was pronounced dead at the scene. The lorry driver was treated for shock following the crash.
Meanwhile, a motorcyclist in his 70s remained in a serious condition in the Midlands Regional Hospital after a high-speed collision with a car on the N52 Tullamore bypass at around 2pm yesterday.
