River project to give €12m boost and 130 jobs

Up to 130 new jobs could be created by improving one of the country's most significant waterways and generating almost €12m in extra revenue.

That's according to a new study, 'Unlocking the Barrow', which shows the benefits such work would provide to the region stretching from Athy down to the southeast coast.

The Barrow navigation runs from Co Laois down as far as St Mullins in Carlow and is navigable to New Ross and beyond to Dunmore East and the sea.

According to the report, its full potential is restricted by the low arches of Graiguecullen Bridge at Carlow and a natural rapid at St Mullins, where navigation is restricted except at near-high tide.
