River death teen may have been fleeing gardai
The Garda Ombudsman is investigating the death of a teenager who is believed to have drowned in a river while being sought by gardai.
Officers had been seeking 17-year-old Quey Laurence and two others after receiving a report that men had been seen acting suspiciously on Bord na Mona-owned land near Kilcormac, Co Offaly, on Saturday night.
A garda patrol later spotted their car at Ferbane and gave chase as it sped from the area.
The gardai lost contact with the car during the pursuit.
But shortly after midnight, officers found that the car had spun out of control and crashed. Locals told them that three men had run into a field.
Officers believe that the three attempted to swim across the river Brosna but Quey, from Spa Road, Portarlington, Co Laois, got into difficulties.
The teenager's body was later recovered from the river by the Garda Water Unit. As a result of the circumstances surrounding the incident, the garda authorities referred the case to the Ombudsman Commission for investigation.
