Right at home on the range

MORE than a hundred artillery troops are being put through their paces in a week-long firing exercise in the Glen of Imaal in west Wicklow.

The soldiers, who are drawn from 2 Artillery Regiment from Custume Barracks in Athlone, include new and existing members of the corps.

The secure military firing range was lit up day and night as the troops tested their skills on a variety of weapons, including the 105mm light gun, which has a range of more than 17km and the much lighter 120mm mortar, which can cover over seven kilometres.

Members of the Reserve were also given an opportunity to train with the weapons.
