MORE than 100 former miners and their supporters protested outside the Dail yesterday to voice their opposition to the pension levy, which they say is hitting their meagre pensions unfairly.

The Tara Mines Pensioners Group said their pensions had been reduced by 2.5pc due to the levy and the loss of their cost-of-living indexation.

Retired miner Sean Belton said: "Some of us are helping our children and grandchildren in the present climate, but this is making it very difficult."

The average pension of a Tara Mines worker is €10,000.

Tom Kelly, chairman of the group, said miners' pensions were not big enough to absorb the cut without a significant impact on their living standards.

He added: "We need a decent mandatory occupational pension scheme in this country -- not some tin-pot scam to suit the pensions industry," he added.
