Retired protest over pension protection

AROUND 100 retired workers protested outside Leinster House to demand that the "real value" of the state pension be retained in the Budget.
The protest, held by members of SIPTU's retired members' section, called on the Government to protect their pensions.
Protesters pointed out that the majority of retired people depend on the state pension to keep them out of poverty and that any cut would have a devastating impact.
There is speculation the Government may slash or means-test some pensioners' benefits -- such as free travel and free TV licences.
