AN elderly woman was left in a "highly traumatised" state following an aggravated burglary during which she was threatened with a replica gun.

The 74-year-old was at home in Arden View, Tullamore, Co Offaly, when a man brandishing the firearm, which gardai have said was an imitation, entered the house at around 9pm on Sunday.

He assaulted the woman before escaping with a small amount of money.

While the woman did not attend hospital "she was obviously highly traumatised", a garda spokesman said.

He added that the assailant, who had a red scarf over his face, was in his late teens to early-20s, of slim build and was wearing a black puffy anorak, black bottoms and gloves.

Gardai are investigating the possibility that the break-in may be linked to the robbery of a shop in Tullamore on Friday evening, when a female member of staff at Fox's in Kilbride Street was assaulted by an unarmed man who escaped with a small amount of cash.

The thief was of slim build, and wore grey tracksuit bottoms and a green hoodie.

Gardai in Tullamore are asking anyone with information to contact them on 057 93 27600.
