Remarks seen as a sign of sibling tension
FIANNA Fail TDs around Leinster House were bemused last night over Conor Lenihan's "lovely axe" comments about his brother Brian.
One TD said the remarks would not go down well across the party -- even if they were meant as a joke.
Some said it pointed to tensions between the two brothers, although others dismissed such claims. "There does seem to be some tension between the two of them. If I had my brother in the Dail with me, I'd be proud of him but there is tension there," said a Dublin TD.
But Mary O'Rourke, Conor and Brian's aunt, described the comments as just a joke and insisted people should not get in a lather about the incident.
Conor was promoted to the junior ministerial ranks by former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern in 2004. He has remained as a junior minister ever since.
Brian was given his full Cabinet stripes in 2007, when he became Justice Minister and was promoted to the finance brief by Brian Cowen in 2008.
"Conor can be a bit of a loose cannon and is a nice guy but he seems to be a bit annoyed of late," one TD said. "Brian is very, very popular and what Conor said won't go down well."
