Human remains have been found by police searching for a missing woman in the Midlands.

Mother-of-one Marie Greene was last seen at her family home more than a week ago.

A man in his 60s was arrested at his home yesterday morning.

Gardai said State Pathologist Marie Cassidy and the Garda Technical Bureau have been called to examine an area of bogland at Annaghgortagh on the Athlone to Mullingar road, about 3km outside the town.

A senior Garda source revealed officers searching the bog have recovered a body.

"They haven't dug her up yet but they think it's her," he said.

Ms Greene, 37, went missing in Athlone on Sunday February 13 at 9pm. Her mother, Winnie, feared her daughter had been killed or abducted.

The Garda air support and sub aqua teams were called in last week to support local search operations.

The suspect's house in the town was also sealed off and searched as part of the investigation as he was questioned on suspicion of murder under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The Garda said it was a great result for investigators.

"But the end result is there is a family who has lost a daughter and a mother," he added.

"We are still dealing with the family and waiting for formal identification."
