Health Minister Dr James Reilly’s radical reform of the health service will go through the Oireachtas Health Committee as a means to consult with the public on the plan.

Dr Reilly’s idea of a citizens parliament to decide on services to covered by insurance package has been dropped by the Cabinet.

The minister’s outline of preferred options for inclusion in the basket of services to be included under UHI is also to be cut from the document setting out the plan.

The White Paper on Universal Health Insurance will go back to Cabinet next week and will subsequently be published.
