Register fee is 'tax', say health workers

A RANGE of health workers who will have to enter a professional register for the first time claimed yesterday the annual fee of €295 is a "tax on employment".

Social workers are the first of the 12 health professions who must register or they will not be allowed to practise.

The social workers must be covered from May 2013, a conference organised by their union IMPACT heard yesterday.

IMPACT officer Christina Carney said it is far in excess of the fee demanded of nurses and she advised social workers not to pay it.
