Record set as 1,000 run in coastal half-marathon

MORE than 1,000 competitors ran and limped over the finish line of a half- marathon on the west coast.

The village of Keel on Achill Island off the coast of Mayo was awash with colour on Saturday.

The spectacular backdrop of the Minaun Cliffs set the stage for Sport Minister and local TD Michael Ring to officially start the race.

The winner was Michael Shannon from Co Clare, who set a new record of one hour, 11 minutes and 56 seconds in breezy conditions.

The first woman was Fionnuala Doherty, who finished in one hour, 29 minutes, 43 seconds. She was also fastest female in 2011.

Noel Scanlon, chairperson of Achill Events Management, said: "As always, the half-marathon was a great success, helped in no small part by the team of 175 local volunteers.''
