A Dublin-based musician who has been listed in the 'Guinness Book of World Records' has been described as the "perfect role model".

John Gannon (99), from Oliver Bond Street, first joined St James's Brass and Reed Band in March 1936.

His long-standing devotion as a bass player in the band has now been recognised, as he has been entered into the record books as the longest-serving band member in the world after 81 years' service.

To celebrate this achievement, and also his birthday, a celebratory Mass was held for Mr Gannon in John's Lane Church.

More than 500 of his friends, family and fellow band members came out to celebrate his long-standing success.

"Being a member of St James's Brass and Reed Band has been a huge honour, and I wish them every success."

Meanwhile, some of the more unusual entrants to the latest edition of the book include statuesque Russian model Ekaterina Lisina, who claimed the title of tallest professional model at 6ft 8.77in tall and also had the longest legs at 52.2in.

Chinese woman You Jianxia was named as having the world's longest eyelashes at 4.88in.
