Real IRA arms haul uncovered

Gardai uncovered a Real IRA weapons cache after a planned search of a forested area in Kildare yesterday, writes Tom Brady.

A pistol and three pipebombs were taken away for forensic examination as anti-terrorist officers stepped up their inquiries last night.

The find was made in undergrowth in a wood off the Ardclough Road, outside Celbridge, Co Kildare.

The search followed an intelligence gathering operation by the Special Branch investigating the activities of dissident republicans in counties Dublin and Kildare.

The haul had been concealed and was left there for collection by Real IRA activists, who are heavily involved in a campaign of extortion and intimidation.
