Rangers in anti-hijack operation
THE Army Ranger Wing has carried out a major exercise off the east coast to combat armed hijackings of ships.
The maritime counter-terrorism operation was based in Dublin Port and on the Irish Sea and lasted for most of the week.
The Rangers, who are the elite unit of the Defence Forces, were supported in the exercise by the Naval Service and the Air Corps.
The exercise was designed to enhance the capacity of the Defence Forces to provide a highly-specialised intervention capability.
The Rangers were confronted with a complex simulation of a terrorist attack on large vessels including passenger ferries entering the port.
