GARDAI are hunting raiders who tied up and threatened a couple in their home close to where government minister Joan Burton lives.
The terrifying incident happened at 3am on Saturday as two children slept upstairs in the house on the Old Cabra Road, in Dublin 7. Gardai believe the raiders – who fled with just €500 – mistakenly thought their intended targets lived at the address.
The two raiders broke into the house on the Old Cabra Road, Dublin at 3.10am, where three adults and two children were asleep inside.
They used cable ties to bind the hands of two of the adults and then threatened them with physical violence, gardai said.
Two barristers live in the house but there was not a substantial amount of cash or valuables on the property, leading gardai to believe the raiders had mistaken the house as belonging to somebody else.
The men, who were described as speaking with Dublin accents, escaped with less than €500.
Nobody was physically hurt in the aggravated burglary, and the young children were not woken.
The house that was targeted is close to the house in which Social Protection Minister Joan Burton lives.
She was not available for comment last night and neighbours said they did not hear or see anything during the burglary but had been visited by gardai carrying out house-to house enquiries.
Gardai at the Bridewell are investigating the incident, and have asked for the assistance of the public.
In particular they are interested in speaking to anyone who was in the vicinity of two areas of Cabra between 2.30am and 4.30am on Saturday and saw any suspicious or unusual activity or vehicles.
The first site they are interested in is the old J J Reid's garage on the Old Cabra Road . The second site is between the Topaz garage and Cabra Cross on the New Cabra Road.
One of the suspects is described as being between 5ft 8ins and 5ft 10in tall, of thin build and wearing a black woolly hat.
He wore a navy jacket and khaki-coloured combat trousers.
The second man is about 5ft 11in and larger in build than the other man.
He also wore a black woolly hat as well as navy combat-style trousers.
Any person with any information is requested to contact the Bridewell garda station on 01 6668200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
