Sunday Independent contributor Rachel Lavin (22) has been named national press Journalist of the Year at the National Student Media Awards (Smedias) 2015.
The talented 22-year-old, from Boyle, Co Roscommon, is a final-year English student at Trinity College Dublin and is the editor of The University Times Magazine at TCD.
Rachel, daughter of Gerard and Mary, also won Features Writer of the Year in the news and current affairs category on the night.
Her recent article on Ireland's only Amish Mennonite community, published by this newspaper last November, is one of the pieces that helped Rachel get top honours in the 'National Press' category of the highly coveted student awards.
She also recently wrote an inspirational account of three elderly Irish nuns fighting Ebola on the front-line in Lofa County in northern Liberia.
Rachel is heading off to Washington DC straight after she finishes her final year exams to take part in the Summer with the Washington Ireland Program for Service & Leadership. The project offers a unique opportunity for Irish students to learn about the US political process and to help shape a new generation of leaders.
