Chewbacca, the hirsute wookiee from 'Star Wars', took a break from filming in Co Kerry to visit some of his most devoted fans.

The intergalactic traveller called to Scoil Fheirtearaigh in Ballyferriter to say hello to sci-fi fans and students.

The 7ft hero - played onscreen by Peter Mayhew - arrived in a blacked-out SUV while school kids performed a rendition of the 'Star Wars' theme on a variety of musical instruments.

Chewbacca posed for photographs with the children, some of whom were armed with lightsabres.

He also fielded questions from curious kids.

Chewbacca, or 'Chewie' as he is known to close pals, responded to questions in his native language, Shyriiwook.

His answers were translated into English and Irish for the children to understand.

Filming for 'Star Wars Episode VIII' wrapped yesterday. Kerry has become the unofficial home of the Jedi warriors, with a Jedi temple being constructed at Ceann Sibéal in Ballyferriter.

Dunmore Head in Dun Chaoin, and Fearann near Ceann Sibéal were also used as locations.

The cast seemed to enjoy their time in the Kingdom of Kerry. Adam Diver, who plays villain Kylo Ren, paid regular visits to West Kerry Fitness gym, while Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey, was seen in the Courthouse pub.
