Public urged to keep eye on elderly neighbours
THE public have been urged to look out for their elderly neighbours during the cold weather.
Age Action has called on people to watch out for older members of the community and ensure they are warm.
"Periods of prolonged cold weather pose a particular challenge for older people. We are calling on the public to show the same generosity and community spirit that they did earlier this month, and to pay particular attention to visiting older people who are living alone," spokesman Eamon Timmins said.
People have been asked to bring solid fuels from sheds into the homes of the elderly.
The charity said those who were concerned about heating their home should concentrate on keeping the rooms that they live in warm.
"The cold can kill and does kill," Mr Timmins said. "Between 1,500 and 2,000 excess deaths occur during the winter in Ireland, compared to the summer. Many of these are older people who die as a result of respiratory illness or cardiovascular disease."
