Published 06/09/2013 | 08:22

* A sister of Patricia Kierans called to gardai in Bailieborough yesterday evening. She expressed her concern that she could not contact Patricia.

* At around 6pm officers called to the house of the mother of four in Drumbannon and found her lifeless body with gunshot wounds

* At the same time, gardai learned of a man in an “agitated state” in the centre of Bailieborough

* Events escalated with the 56-year-old man produced a gun, and entered the well-known Nixy’s Square Bar in the town

* Patrons and staff are believed to have immediately left the pub and the man went to the basement of the property

* When gardai approached the man, they were threatened and forced to retreat

* Other premises on Market Square were evacuated

* A trained negotiator was called in along with officers from two special units, with dialogue opening shortly after 6pm

* Gardai kept the lines of communication open with the man as they urged him to surrender and hand over his weapon

* At approximately 3am the man was arrested after he came out the back door of the pub
