EDUCATION Minister Ruairi Quinn has admitted there are problems with the new system for processing college grant applications.
Delays by the Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) agency are causing hardship for students, according to the Union of Students in Ireland.
USI says only 18,000 of the 66,000 who had applied for grants have got a response.
A representative from SUSI is due to appear before an Oireachtas committee this morning.
Adding to the pressure on the Government, Fianna Fail is putting down a motion in the Dail on third-level grants.
Mr Quinn said the delays in processing student grants are not satisfactory and it was clear there are problems with the new system.
