A PRIVATE company is investigating the expenses claims of TDs and senators for the first time, writes Michael Brennan, Deputy Political Editor. Previously, the only checking of expenses was carried out by an Oireachtas committee.
Accountancy firm Mazars will carry out a random audit of the expenses of up to 22 TDs and senators each year.
The first such audit is now under way, covering the period from last March to the end of last year although there is no date for its completion. New TDs who were elected in March will escape this year's audit.
The audit is focusing on the TDs and senators who claimed the higher expense allowance of €25,700 and €15,000 respectively and have to provide receipts for everything.
