Prisoners fail to return to jail after Christmas
TWO prisoners who were granted temporary release for Christmas have failed to return to jail.
They were part of a group of 160 inmates allowed out on parole for periods ranging from a few hours to seven nights.
Last year eight prisoners initially failed to return, but seven of them were quickly located or turned up at the jail doors, while the final missing criminal was found in May.
In 2009 two prisoners who did not return after Christmas managed to stay on the run for the year.
More than 60pc of the prisoners let out by Justice Minister Alan Shatter last month were serving their sentences in low security institutions.
It is understood that neither of the two missing prisoners had been facing a lengthy period behind bars.
