GARDAI are investigating the second arson attack in a month on the Cork home of a prison officer.

The officer's car was found blazing in the early hours of this (Saturday) morning outside Blarney, Co Cork.

The fire was quickly extinguished but the car was left a total write-off.

It is the second attack on the officer's home with another vehicle having been set alight just three weeks ago.

Gardai believe the latest attack involved a petrol bomb being thrown underneath the parked car sometime around 2am.

No-one was injured in the incident but gardai are treating the matter as "very serious."

Gardai are now checking CCTV security camera footage from around the general area but fear there is no coverage of the location where the car was attacked.

It is feared the officer is being deliberately targeted over their official duties.

Gardai will now increase patrols around the officer's home to prevent any further incidents.

A number of lines of inquiry are being pursued in relation to the attacks.

The prison officers is understood to be "deeply upset" over the attacks and the deliberate targeting of their home.
