A prisoner who was under escort to the Mater Hospital this morning has sprayed a prison officer with his own blood after he tried to confiscate a parcel of drugs that was handed to him by a visitor, according to security sources.

The inmate was brought from Mountjoy Prison to the Emergency Department of the hospital early today.

However, when there it is reported he was passed a parcel of drugs by a visitor.

When the prison officers attempted to retrieve and confiscate the drugs the prisoner pulled the intravenous needle that had been placed in his arm and sprayed the officers with his blood.

The prisoner was returned to Mountjoy but prison sources say he struggled on the way back and assaulted the staff on the escort.
