Priceless cross is on way home
ONE of Ireland's greatest treasures is on its way home, writes Tom Shiel.
The priceless Cross of Cong is returning to Co Mayo as part of the National Museum's policy to repatriate historic relics.
Crafted in 1123, the cross, which has not been west of the Shannon for 170 years, is being transferred from the Kildare Street Museum of Archaeology to the National Museum of Country Life at Turlough, near Castlebar.
Local community groups warmly welcomed the decision.
