Pressure grows on Reilly over VHI hikes

Fionnan Sheahan Political Editor

Health Minister James Reilly is under pressure to halt the spiralling cost of health insurance for families following the latest threat to hike premiums.

The VHI is warning its premiums could rise by 45pc due to new government charges.

Fianna Fail health spokes- man Billy Kelleher said the threatened increase was further evidence Dr Reilly's strategy on universal health insur- ance was either in tatters or never existed in the first place.

"This minister was elected on a promise that everyone would have health insurance. Instead, all that has happened is the price of health insurance has soared," he said.

Dr Reilly is looking at charging the full cost for private patients using public beds but won't clarify his plans.

"Decisions on this matter will be made as part of the budgetary process," a spokesperson said.
