President's praise for athletes
PRESIDENT Mary McAleese paid tribute yesterday to the Irish squad who excelled at the Special Olympics European Summer Games in Poland last month.
She honoured the team for their hard work and bringing "Ireland to the very heart of Poland" at a special reception she hosted alongside her husband Dr Martin McAleese at Aras an Uachtarain yesterday.
Noting some 10 gold, eight silver and 11 bronze medals that the team brought home, she praised the team for the "great efforts made and great friendships forged through fun and laughter" at the games.
"Long before the games started you were preparing. You were training even when you were tired and the weather was miserable. You were determined to do your best in Poland and that you did," she said.
