Presidential salute to older generation
IRELAND'S ageing population was celebrated yesterday as President Mary McAleese paid tribute to generations who lived through recessions and depressions.
Mrs McAleese commended the country's elderly who are the backbone of volunteer organisations. She marked Age Action's positive ageing week at a photography exhibition capturing the fun side of older people. Images depicting Generations Together include a portrait of Bridget Stanley (89) with great granddaughter Lucy Waine (2). Julien Behal's photograph (above) shows Lucy reading a book on Bridget's knee in front of a portrait of grandma at ESB Headquarters in Dublin.
"Isn't it a wonderful thing the country is hopping and buzzing with the energy of our senior citizens teaching us a thing or two," the President said.
