President set for city honours

PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins is to be honoured by the city he has called home for the last 50 years.
A civic reception is expected to be held in the coming weeks to honour the new President and welcome him back to Galway.
It is likely that he will also receive the Freedom of the City and follow in the footsteps of former Presidents Douglas Hyde (1930) and Sean T O'Kelly (1950). Eamon de Valera was made a Freeman of the City of Galway in 1946 when he was Taoiseach.
The city council will meet next month to discuss "an appropriate honour" to bestow on Mr Higgins.
