The son of former President of Ireland Patrick Hillery will put himself forward for selection for Fianna Fail in the Co Clare constituency when the party holds its convention in Ennis this weekend.
Dr John Hillery, a former president of the Irish Medical Council, is based in Dublin but has always retained strong ties with his native county.
Last night, Patrick Moloney, chairman of the Comhairle Dail Ceantair in the county, confirmed Dr Hillery would put himself forward for selection.
Fianna Fail will meet this weekend to decide who should fight to retain the party's two seats in Co Clare although the task has been made more difficult by the shock announcement last week that Clare TD and defence minister, Tony Killeen (58), will not run.
