As part of a three-day official visit to Italy, President Higgins and his wife Sabina launched the 'National Day Ireland' at Expo Milano 2015. The Irish Government has selected Bord Bia's Origin Green programme as the key focus of the Ireland Pavilion at the Expo, which is expected to have 20 million visitors over the next six months.

"Origin Green will be a valuable contributor to the food security debate and while it may not be possible to replicate it in every country, it shows that with innovative thinking and especially buy-in from stakeholders, solutions can be found and, more importantly, implemented," said President Higgins.

Origin Green is a voluntary sustainability programme involving 450 food and drink producers, from farming to manufacturing. It is the only programme in the world on a national scale.
