Postmasters in plea

REPRESENTATIVES for post offices called on the Govern-ment to suspend a move towards a fully electronic social welfare payment system.

The Irish Postmasters' Union (IPU) said 50pc of welfare transactions involve cash payments in post offices. It said a fully electronic payments system would result in the closure of 550 of the country's 1,100 post offices.

ROAD DEATH APPEAL

GARDAI are appealing for witnesses to a fatal crash in Cashel, Co Tipperary.

PJ Hall (63) was fatally injured when the car he was driving left the road, hit a ditch and collided with a tree around 2.30pm on Saturday. A 35-year-old man who was a passenger in the car was hurt.

TEENS ATTACK MAN

A MAN suffered serious facial injuries in an unprovoked assault by a group of teens.

The 31-year-old was attacked at 4.30pm on Saturday on Winthrop Street in Cork city centre, just metres from the busy Patrick Street shopping area. The victim was taken to Cork University Hospital. Gardai later detained two teenagers in relation to the incident.
