Post mistress and son shot

Independent.ie reporters

A post mistress and her son were shot in a Post Office raid in Oulart, Co Wexford this morning.

The 66-year old woman was shot in the arm and her son was shot in the leg.

Both mother and son have been taken to hospital where they are undergoing surgery, neither are described as having life-threatening injuries.

In what is now believed to be the second violent event carried out in Wexford within a number of hours, the gang of three raiders demanded money from the postmistress and, for reasons still unclear, shot the woman in the arm when she was behind the counter.

It is understood her 31-year-old son was also shot as he emerged from a door at the back of the post office. He received a shotgun blast to the leg.

An elderly customer in the post office at the time was uninjured.

The raiders made off with a few hundred euro before fleeing to a waiting getaway vehicle.

It is understood that the same raiders tried to rob Sean Og's Hotel in Kilmuckridge, Co. Wexford in the early hours of the morning but did not get any money. A person on the premises sustained a minor injury.

Gardaí have launched a massive search involving armed detectives, Garda air support and members of the emergency response unit.
