Post delay leaves 27,000 without social welfare

Payments to almost 27,000 social welfare recipients who are due to get a weekly payment by cheque today have been delayed by the bad weather.

The cheques couldn't be be collected by An Post staff from the Department of Social and Family Affairs in Dublin yesterday evening, the department said. Management will make every effort today to get the payments to those affected.

Some customers receive payment by cheque, including Supplementary Welfare Allowance, rent and mortgage interest payments, Disability Allowance, and Family Income Supplement. Those in financial difficulty as a result of the delay should contact a Community Welfare Officer, the department said.
